Over the last decade, research has convincingly demonstrated the significant impact of infant and early childhood experiences upon brain development, developmental functioning, and long-term social-emotional adjustment. Early trauma, in particular, can permanently damage neural structures and place children at risk for severe emotional disturbance. The need to develop quality, integrated mental health services for B-5 children is increasingly recognized on the national, state and local level by families and practitioners.
